Used Cardboard Boxes — Quality You Can Trust
Every used box at EcoBoxes NY is hand-inspected, graded, and sorted before it reaches you. Our three-tier grading system ensures you know exactly what you are buying — from like-new Grade A boxes suitable for customer shipments to budget-friendly Grade C boxes perfect for storage and internal use.
Smart Savings, Serious Sustainability
Buying used boxes is not about settling for less. It is about making an intelligent business decision that saves money and reduces environmental impact simultaneously.

Our Grading System
Every used box we sell is individually inspected and assigned a grade. This ensures transparency and helps you choose the right quality level for your application.
Grade A
Like NewGrade A — Like New
Boxes that have been used once or very lightly. Minimal wear, no stains, no printing from previous users. Flaps are intact and clean. Ideal for customer-facing shipments, retail, and e-commerce where appearance matters.
Grade B
Good ConditionGrade B — Good Condition
Boxes with minor cosmetic wear but full structural integrity. May have light scuffing, minor label residue, or slight discoloration. Perfect for warehousing, internal transfers, and non-consumer-facing applications where function matters more than looks.
Grade C
Fair / UsableGrade C — Fair / Usable
Boxes with visible wear that are still structurally functional. May have old printing, heavier tape marks, or cosmetic damage. Best for storage, internal sorting, moving, and single-use applications where price is the primary concern.
Our 5-Step Inspection Process
Quality control is not optional — it is the foundation of our used box business. Every box passes through five checkpoints before it reaches our inventory.
Sourcing & Collection
We collect used boxes from manufacturers, retailers, warehouses, and distribution centers across the New York metro area. Our logistics team picks up directly from the source, ensuring a consistent supply chain of quality materials.
Initial Sorting
Incoming boxes are sorted by size, type, and apparent condition. Boxes that are clearly damaged beyond use — water-logged, mold-affected, or structurally compromised — are separated for recycling rather than resale.
Individual Inspection
Each remaining box is physically examined. Our inspectors check flap integrity, wall strength (using a squeeze test), corner condition, and surface cleanliness. Boxes are flipped, opened, closed, and evaluated under good lighting.
Grading & Labeling
Inspected boxes receive their grade (A, B, or C) and are labeled accordingly. This grade travels with the box through our warehouse and onto your delivery truck, ensuring full traceability from inspection to customer.
Warehousing & Fulfillment
Graded boxes are stacked by size and grade in our climate-controlled warehouse. When you place an order, we pull from the appropriate inventory section, double-check the grade, and prepare your shipment for same-day or next-day dispatch.

How We Source Our Used Boxes
The quality of our used boxes starts with where they come from. We have built a network of sourcing partnerships with businesses across the northeast that generate clean, high-quality used corrugated packaging.
Manufacturing Plants
Factories that receive raw materials in corrugated containers generate a steady stream of once-used boxes. These are our primary source for Grade A inventory — boxes that were used once to ship components and are structurally perfect.
60% of our supplyDistribution Centers
Large distribution centers and 3PL warehouses unpack products from corrugated cases daily. These boxes vary from Grade A to Grade B depending on handling. We pick up regularly scheduled loads from DC partners across NY, NJ, and CT.
20% of our supplyRetailers & Warehouses
Retail stores and warehouse operations generate used boxes from receiving stock. These tend to be Grade B to Grade C — more cosmetic wear but still structurally sound. Common sources include grocery chains, big-box retailers, and furniture stores.
15% of our supplyCorporate Offices
Office moves, equipment installations, and supply deliveries generate surplus clean boxes. These are typically medium-sized, lightly used boxes in excellent condition. We pick up from corporate campuses and office parks.
3% of our supplyOther Box Brokers
When specific sizes are in high demand and our direct sourcing cannot keep up, we purchase from other box brokers and recyclers in the region. All purchased inventory undergoes the same inspection process as directly sourced boxes.
2% of our supplyCommunity Drop-Off
Individuals and small businesses can drop off or arrange pickup of clean used boxes. While this represents a small percentage of our supply, it strengthens our community ties and keeps more boxes out of the waste stream.
SupplementalOur Inspection Process — Step by Step
Every used box we sell passes through a rigorous, multi-step inspection process. This is not a quick visual scan — our team physically handles every box.
Arrival & Unloading
Incoming loads are unloaded and staged in our receiving area. Each load is documented with source information, estimated quantity, and initial condition assessment. Loads that appear to have water damage, mold, or contamination are quarantined for closer inspection before entering the main floor.
We reject approximately 5-8% of incoming boxes at this stage.
Rough Sorting by Size
Boxes are separated by approximate size category: small (under 1 cu ft), medium (1-3 cu ft), large (3-6 cu ft), extra-large (6+ cu ft), and gaylord. This initial sort allows our inspectors to efficiently process similar boxes together and fill specific size inventory gaps.
Sorting takes approximately 2-3 minutes per loaded pallet.
Individual Physical Inspection
Each box is unfolded, physically examined on all six faces, and evaluated for: wall strength (manual squeeze test), flap integrity (all four flaps present and functional), corner condition (no crushing or delamination), surface contamination (stains, mold, odor, chemical residue), and printability (old labels, marker writing, heavy tape residue).
Each box receives 15-30 seconds of hands-on inspection.
Grade Assignment
Based on the inspection, each box is assigned a grade: A (like new — 1-2 uses, no cosmetic defects), B (good condition — minor wear, full structural integrity), or C (fair — visible wear but structurally functional for at least one more use). Boxes that fail all grade criteria are sent directly to recycling.
Typical distribution: 25% Grade A, 45% Grade B, 20% Grade C, 10% recycled.
Cleaning & Preparation
Grade A and B boxes are cleaned as needed. Old labels are removed where practical, heavy tape residue is trimmed, and boxes are flattened uniformly for efficient storage. Grade C boxes receive minimal cleaning — cosmetic imperfections are acceptable at this grade level.
Cleaning adds 10-20 seconds per box for grades A and B.
Measurement & Labeling
Each box is measured (inner dimensions LxWxH) and labeled with its grade and size. Measurements are recorded to the nearest half-inch. Boxes are then banded into bundles of 10-25 (depending on size) with the grade label visible on the outside of each bundle.
Bundles are barcoded for inventory tracking and order fulfillment.
Warehousing & Inventory
Graded, bundled boxes are stored in our warehouse organized by size and grade. Our inventory management system tracks quantities in real time, flagging low-stock sizes for replenishment. The warehouse is covered, dry, and climate-moderated to prevent moisture damage during storage.
Average time from arrival to available inventory: 1-2 business days.
Shelf Life & Storage Recommendations
Used corrugated boxes are a natural fiber product, and their lifespan depends heavily on storage conditions. Properly stored, used boxes maintain their structural integrity for months to years. Improperly stored, they can degrade in weeks.
The primary enemies of corrugated cardboard are moisture, direct sunlight, and compression from overstacking. Moisture causes the fibers to swell, delaminate, and lose stacking strength. UV radiation from sunlight degrades the lignin in paper fibers, causing brittleness. Excessive stacking weight crushes the flutes, permanently reducing the board's shock-absorbing capability.
Store Indoors
Keep boxes in a covered, dry space. Basement, warehouse, or garage is fine. Never store corrugated boxes outdoors uncovered.
Elevate Off Floor
Place boxes on pallets, shelving, or raised platforms. Concrete floors wick moisture into corrugated board through capillary action.
Avoid Direct Sunlight
UV light degrades paper fibers. Store away from windows, skylights, and open loading dock doors.
Limit Stack Height
Stack flattened box bundles no more than 5-6 high. Erected empty boxes should not be stacked more than 3 high.
Control Humidity
Ideal storage humidity is 35-55% RH. Above 65% RH, corrugated board absorbs moisture and loses up to 50% of its stacking strength.
Rotate Stock (FIFO)
Use oldest inventory first. Properly stored used boxes are usable for 6-12+ months, but fresher stock performs better.

Used Boxes FAQ
Are used boxes sanitary and safe for shipping products?
Yes, for most applications. Our inspection process identifies and rejects boxes with contamination, mold, chemical residue, or odor. Used boxes are appropriate for general shipping, warehousing, moving, and non-food applications. For food-contact or pharmaceutical packaging, we recommend new boxes that meet regulatory requirements.
How many times can a corrugated box be reused before it fails?
A well-made corrugated box can typically be reused 3-7 times depending on the contents, handling conditions, and storage environment. Grade A boxes (used 1-2 times) have 3-5 uses remaining. Grade C boxes (used 4+ times) may have 1-2 uses remaining. Factors that accelerate degradation include moisture exposure, heavy contents, and rough handling.
Can I request specific sizes that are not listed in your inventory?
Absolutely. While our inventory fluctuates based on sourcing, we can usually locate specific sizes within 2-5 business days through our network of sourcing partners. If a used box in your required size is not available, we can produce a new box to your exact specifications as an alternative. Contact us with your dimensions and quantity needs.
Do you offer mixed-size pallets for moving or general use?
Yes. We offer curated 'moving bundles' that include a mix of small, medium, and large boxes — typically 10 small, 15 medium, and 10 large — along with tape and packing paper. These bundles are popular with individuals moving apartments and small offices. We also create custom mixed pallets for businesses that need a variety of sizes.
How do you handle boxes with old labels or printing from previous users?
Grade A boxes have no visible old labels or printing. Grade B boxes may have partial label residue that does not affect function. Grade C boxes may have visible old printing or branding. For customer-facing shipments, we recommend Grade A or applying your own labels over any residual markings. Our team removes labels during the cleaning process where practical.
What happens to boxes that fail your inspection?
Boxes that do not meet even our Grade C criteria are sent directly to recycling. We partner with local recycling facilities to ensure these boxes are processed into new corrugated board or other paper products. Nothing goes to landfill. This means our customers benefit from strict quality control while the environment benefits from maximum material recovery.
Can I sell my used boxes to EcoBoxes NY?
Yes, we actively purchase used corrugated boxes from businesses in the New York metro area. If you generate a consistent volume of clean used boxes (minimum one pallet load per pickup), contact us to discuss a sourcing partnership. We pay competitive rates and provide scheduled pickup service, which is often more economical than paying for dumpster and recycling services.
Do used boxes come with any warranty or guarantee?
Every used box we sell is guaranteed to match its assigned grade. If you receive boxes that are graded higher than their actual condition (e.g., labeled Grade A but actually Grade B quality), we replace them at no charge or issue a full credit. Report any quality discrepancies within 7 days of delivery. We also guarantee that no used box we sell has structural defects that would cause it to fail under its rated weight capacity.
How to Evaluate Packaging Products Like an Operations Team
A product catalog is useful, but the real purchasing decision usually depends on fit-for-use. The right question is not just whether a box exists in the correct size. The better question is whether that box matches your load, handling method, storage duration, customer expectation, and total landed cost.
Commercial buyers often save the most when they separate needs into categories: customer-facing shipments, internal transfers, warehouse storage, low-volume odd sizes, and seasonal peaks. Once those categories are defined, it becomes much easier to decide where used boxes make sense and where new production is justified.
This product library is designed to support that kind of decision-making. Each category has a different strength profile, cost structure, and operational use case, and the best results come from matching those details to your actual workflow rather than defaulting to one box style for everything.
Before choosing a product category, confirm
- Required dimensions, usable interior fit, and pallet compatibility
- Whether appearance, print quality, or food-contact compliance requires new material
- Expected weight, stacking load, and handling conditions in storage and transit
- Whether accessories such as liners, caps, tape, or edge protectors should be specified at the same time
